Taste of Dharma

“For success, like happiness, cannot be pursued; it must ensue, and it only does so as the unintended side-effect of one’s personal dedication to a cause greater than oneself or as the by-product of one’s surrender to a person other than oneself.”

Loving Kindness: A Talk on the Metta Sutta
Loving Kindness is both a natural and cultivated aspect of selfless compassion, which together with wisdom into the real nature of all things, form the heart of Buddhist teaching and practice. Taught by the Buddha, this simple and profound teaching offers practical guidance and deep insight into the path of the enlightened life. In this talk, Shugen Roshi will teach on the Metta Sutta and then invite questions to help further examine and clarify its meaning.Copies of the text will be available at the lecture or download here. Before the lecture, 6:30-6:55pm, Shugen Roshi will offer Zen meditation instructions to those who are interested.

The Unexpected Gift of Karma
This discussion is open to everyone, regardless of prior experience with Buddhist practice. The discussion will be on Karma, the profound teaching on cause and effect, and it’s importance in everyday practice.

Doors open at 6:00 PM. • Discounts available–financial hardship will never be a barrier to participation.

Weekly Taste of Dharma

“If you find no one to support you on the spiritual path, walk alone. There is no companionship with the immature.

The immature who know they are immature have a little wisdom. But the immature who look on themselves as wise are utterly foolish.

The immature are their own enemies, doing selfish deeds which will bring them sorrow. That deed is selfish which brings remorse and suffering in its wake.

Sweet are selfish deeds to the immature until they see the results; when they see the results they suffer.

As fresh milk needs time to curdle, a selfish deed takes time to bring sorrow in its wake.

The immature go after false prestige–precedence, power, and praise. Choose the path that leads to nirvana; avoid the road to profit and pleasure, and strive always for wisdom.”

-The Immature, from The Dhammapada

A massive tree
whose branches carry fruits and leaves,
with trunks and roots
and an abundance of fruits:
There the birds find rest.
In that delightful sphere
they make their home.
Those seeking shade
come to the shade,
those seeking fruit
find fruit to eat.

So with the person consummate
in virtue and conviction,
humble, sensitive, gentle,
delightful, and mild:
To him come those without effluent —
free from passion,
free from aversion,
free from delusion —
the field of merit for the world.

They teach him the Dhamma
that dispels all stress.
And when he understands,
he is freed from effluents,
totally unbound.

– From the Saddha Sutta, Translated from the Pail by Thanissaro Bhikku
